It’s no secret I haven’t written much on Substack. For one thing, I am scrambling to finish up my undergrad degree by December Summa Cum Laude, that is, with a 4.0 GPA. My plan is to go to China in February, after Chinese New Year, and start teaching English. I have to have a degree before then, so I have been focusing on that for some time now.
But that is not the only thing I have been doing. This last term, I took a writing workshop and it really sparked my interest in writing again, and I wanted just one place where I could, for at least the next ten years, put all my thoughts. You see, the next ten years are important to me. For one, I start my MFA next year. After that, who knows? I think if I could go to college and keep getting degrees for as long as I am alive, I would do it. I’d love to have a Dr. in front of my name before I die, if only that it would look awesome on my tombstone.
I love college. I love academia. One of the reasons that I want to teach is that I want to work in a university if I am able-bodied. Learning is life for me, and if I could teach and continue to learn at the same time, I could spend the next 10 to 30 years a happy man. The next ten years will also see me working on my physical health, because I really want to travel, and I have the green light from my wife. She is starting her undergrad next year, so the next 4 or 5 years will be a busy time for her. I see myself teaching abroad, taking short trips around the world in between terms, and always ending up at home in the Philippines with my wife and children.
Much will happen over the next few years, so I created a blog to house only my daily thoughts and notions. This newsletter will still serve as the place where I post my work since Medium has all but gone down the toilet, but my new blog, The Last 10 Years of My Life, will be the inside look into my travels, teaching abroad, improving myself mentally and physically, spending quality time with my family, working on my books, and visiting family in the USA.
Yes, you heard that right. I will be working on a book for NaNoWriMo in November. I pledge to write at least 50k words before the end of the month. I will be working on a story I have been developing for a while, with elements of a fictional autobiography, notes from my personal essays, and a story that has been bouncing around my brain for a few years now. It’s called “Psychosis Squad,” and it has a lot to do with people’s preconceived notions of what mental illness is. It will be more science fiction than anything, but I plan to use elements of my own story to assign to the characters as they go through their lives and have adventures.
It's either going to be great or a total piece of garbage, but I am leaning toward ensuring that this book is a hit.
I just got my Cap and Gown FedEx’d to me, and I am trying to order my honor society cords and stole. I just had my membership to Alpha Sigma Lambda transferred over to SNHU, and I am hoping I can network within the rolls of the brothers and sisters on the roster. Are you a member of ASL?
It’s been so long since I updated all my friends here on SubStack, so I wanted to let you know what is going on and invite you over to my new blog, as well.
So, leave me a comment. How are all of you doing?
